Respiratory symptoms associated with asthma, bronchitis , or COPD are commonly treated with the prescription of aerosol medications delivered via metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) or “puffers.” A metered-dose inhaler contains the medication and the propellant that delivers the medication to the lungs. Aerosol treatments are effective because they work quickly and have minimal side effects. However, because typical metered dose devices deliver a dose at speeds in excess of 100 km/h [Newman, 1983], effective delivery of the drug to the lungs can be difficult. To be effective, the device must be depressed during inhalation so that the drug can reach the deepest part of the lungs. Without this coordination, the benefit of taking the drug is minimized, as some of the drug becomes trapped in the mouth or pharynx and is absorbed into the bloodstream.
